Ege in English. USE in English

English is the most popular of the four languages that are taken as part of the USE. Taking English is no more difficult or easier than taking German, French or Spanish. The structure of the USE in English also does not differ from the USE in other foreign languages.

Testing is spread over two days. On the first day, the student takes the compulsory written part, which consists of four sections:

  • Section 1: Listening (1-9), the answers to the tasks are a number or a sequence of numbers.
  • Section 2: Reading (10-18), the answers to the tasks are a number or a sequence of numbers.
  • Section 3: Grammar and Vocabulary (19-38), the answer to the task is a number, a word or several words, written without spaces and punctuation marks.
  • Section 4: Writing (39-40), consists of two tasks - writing a personal letter and a statement with elements of reasoning.

In total, there are 40 tasks in the written part, and 180 minutes are allotted for them.

On the second day of the exam, students take the oral part, consisting of four tasks (to test speaking skills). You have 15 minutes to complete the oral exam.

To pass the exam, you need to correctly solve at least 17 tasks from section 3 or 2 and 3. Thus, you gain 17 primary points, which, when translated into test ones, give 22. It is worth noting that only for the written part you can get no more than 80 points.

To differentiate examinees by the level of foreign language proficiency, the work includes tasks of different levels of complexity: basic (A2 + on the scale of the Council of Europe), advanced (B1) and high (B2). Within each section of the work, tasks are arranged in ascending order of difficulty.

The distribution of tasks according to the level of complexity in the examination paper in a foreign language differs from papers in other subjects. In English, the complexity of a task is determined not by its type, but by the complexity of the language material used and the skills and abilities being tested. So, for example, task 39 (personal writing) belongs to the basic (simplest) level of difficulty, and reading tasks 12-18 are to a high level and, therefore, are among the most difficult to complete.

For the completion of each section, the examinee can receive a maximum of 20 primary points. In the absence of the Speaking section, the maximum primary score was 80, which was then multiplied by a factor of 1.25. Thus, the examinee received a maximum of 100 final test scores.

In 2015, the section "Speaking" was introduced into the examination paper in a foreign language. Taking into account the oral part of the exam, the maximum primary score is 100 and no additional recalculation is necessary. Thus, the final test score is equal to the number of primary points scored.

The "Speaking" section in the new format includes 4 tasks of an open type with a detailed answer, of which 3 are basic-level tasks (1-3) and one high-level task (4). The maximum score for the performance of the "Speaking" section is 20 points.

The number of points scored by the examinee in the sections "Listening", "Reading", "Grammar and Vocabulary" is determined using automated processing of answer forms No. 1. For each correct answer, the student receives 1 point. For an incorrect answer or no answer, the student receives 0 points.

The level of formation of a complex of productive skills in the sections "Writing" and "Speaking" is determined by experts who have undergone special training in evaluating USE tasks in accordance with the methodological recommendations for evaluating tasks with a detailed answer prepared by FIPI.

The minimum number of test scores confirming that a graduate has mastered a general education program in a foreign language is 22 points (according to 2015 data).

Let's present everything described in the form of a table:

The start time of the exam in all subjects is 10.00 am local time.

Admission of USE participants to PES is carried out from 09.00 local time.

USE participants should not be late for the exam, since for such exam participants the duration of the exam is not extended and general instruction, including filling in the registration fields of the USE forms, is not carried out.

At the entrance to the PES, the USE participant must present an identity document (hereinafter referred to as the passport).

If, for objective reasons, the student does not have a passport, he is allowed in the PES only after a written confirmation of his identity by the accompanying person from the school.

In the absence of a passport for a graduate of previous years and other categories of USE participants, such USE participants are not allowed in the PES.

In the PPE, the USE participant takes with him:

  • pen;
  • the passport;
  • medicines and nutrition (if necessary);
  • means of training and education (in mathematics, a ruler; in physics - a ruler and a non-programmable calculator; in chemistry - a non-programmable calculator; in geography - a ruler, a protractor, a non-programmable calculator);
  • USE participants with disabilities, children with disabilities and the disabled - special technical equipment.
Other personal items (a notice of registration for the exam, communications equipment and other prohibited means and materials) must be left by the participants of the exam in a place specially designated before entering the PES for storing personal belongings of the exam participants.

In the PES, the organizers outside the classroom assist the USE participants in moving around the PES. The organizers inform the USE participants of the classroom numbers in accordance with the automated distribution and accompany the exam participants to the classrooms.

The organizers in the audience re-check the passport of the USE participants and send the USE participant to the workplace according to the automated distribution lists.

Take the seat indicated by the organizer. Changing the workplace is not allowed.

When distributing sets of examination materials, all USE participants must:

  • carefully listen to the briefing given by the organizers in the audience;
  • pay attention to the integrity of the packaging of the safe package with electronic media and listen to information about the procedure for printing examination materials (hereinafter - EM) in the classroom;
  • receive printed complete sets of EM from the organizers. In the EM of the USE participant are:
    • black and white registration form (during the oral part of the exam in foreign languages, only the registration form for the oral exam is in the EM);
    • black and white answer sheet No. 1;
    • black and white one-sided answer sheet No. 2 sheet 1 (with the exception of the exam in mathematics at the basic level);
    • black and white one-sided answer sheet No. 2 sheet 2 (with the exception of the exam in mathematics at the basic level);
    • a checklist with information about the number of the registration form, the number of the CMM and instructions for checking the kit for the participant.
Additional answer forms No. 2 are issued by the organizers separately at the request of the USE participant.

Note. The written part of the exam in foreign languages includes the section "Listening", all tasks for which (instructions, texts, pauses) are completely recorded on audio. The organizer must set up the playback of the recording in such a way that it can be heard by all participants in the exam.

Receive drafts from the organizers, with the stamp of the educational organization on the basis of which the PES is located (in the case of the Unified State Examination in foreign languages with the “Speaking” section included, drafts are not issued).

  • Compare the unique CMM number on the CMM sheets and the CMM number indicated on the control sheet;
  • compare the digital value of the barcode on the registration form with the value indicated on the control sheet;
  • make sure the values in both pairs of numbers match. In case of discrepancy, inform the organizers about it (who will replace the entire set of EVs);
  • check the quality of the printed set (the absence of white and dark stripes, the text is well readable and clearly printed, the security marks located over the entire surface of the CMM sheet are clearly visible), and also check the correctness of the region code and PES number in the answer registration form. If any marriage is detected, it is necessary to replace the entire set of EM.

WHEN FILLING OUT THE REGISTRATION FORM AND ANSWER FORMS, ALL USE PARTICIPANTS SHOULD:

Listen carefully to the instructions on how to fill in the registration area of registration forms, answer forms and how to work with examination materials;

Under the guidance of the organizers, fill in the registration form and the registration areas of answer forms No. 1 and 2.

  7. Rewrite the tasks of KIM into drafts with the stamp of the educational organization of the Unified State Examination.
  8. Arbitrarily leave the audience and move around the PES without the accompaniment of the organizer outside the audience
Note. In case of violation of these requirements and refusal to comply with them, the organizers, together with the members of the state examination commission (hereinafter referred to as the SEC), have the right to remove the USE participant from the exam. In this case, the organizers, together with the SEC, draw up an act to remove the USE participant from the exam. The forms are labeled with the fact of removal from the exam.
The examination work of such a USE participant is not checked.

USE participants can leave the audience for a good reason (to the toilet, to the medical room) only when accompanied by the organizer outside the audience, the organizer in the audience first checks the completeness of the exam materials left by the USE participant.

In the event of a claim regarding the content of the KIM, inform the organizer about it.

IMPORTANT: when writing answers to tasks, DO NOT use the back of the forms. All records are kept ONLY on the front side (to record detailed answers, first on the answer form No. 2 sheet 1, then on the answer form No. 2 sheet 2, then on the RBS No. 2). The entries on the reverse side of the forms will not be checked, and the conflict committee will also not consider appeals regarding the entries on the reverse side of the forms as appeals on issues related to the incorrect execution of the examination paper.

If the USE participant has completely filled out the answer form No. 2, the organizer in the audience must:

  • make sure that the answer sheet 2 is completely filled out, otherwise the answers entered in the additional answer form 2 will not be evaluated;
  • issue an additional answer form No. 2 at the request of the USE participant;
  • fill in the upper field in the additional answer form No. 2 (when issuing an additional answer form No. 2, in the field "Additional answer form No. 2" of the main answer form No. 2, enter the number of the additional answer form issued No. 2, and put the number on the issued additional answer form No. 2 sheet in the appropriate field of the form);

USE in English in 2019 still remains a subject of choice, but there is already a decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation that from 2022 the unified state exam in English will become mandatory along with the Russian language and mathematics.

Schools participating in the pilot project were even less fortunate: their graduates will take English mandatory as early as 2020.

“Well, tests ain "t fair. Those that study have an unfair advantage. It" s always been that way.”

Well, the exams aren't fair. Those who teach have an unfair advantage. And so it has always been.

~ Allan Dare Pearce, Paris in April

Despite the growing popularity, USE in English is considered one of the most difficult exams for school graduates and university entrants. Even careful preparation and availability of Cambridge Exams certificates do not guarantee you a high score on the exam. “How so?” - you ask.

The fact is that, like any other international exam (FCE, KET, IELTS, etc.), the USE in English has its own structure, typical tasks and assessment criteria that directly affect your result.

Today we will try to tell you what exactly you need to know for everyone who plans pass the exam in English in 2019-2020

USE in English:

The USE in English is taken in the 11th grade and is the final exam for graduates of Russian schools.

Unified State Exam (USE)- this is the state final certification of students in the eleventh grade of Russian schools. The results of the USE make it possible during the year when the exam was taken, and the next 4 years, to choose and enter a secondary specialized or higher educational institution.

USE in English divided into two parts: written and oral. The written part of the exam lasts 3 hours (180 minutes), and oral only 15 minutes including preparation time.

At the Unified State Examination in English, graduates are invited to complete only 44 tasks, namely:

● 38 closed tasks in which you only need to choose the correct answer

● 6 tasks with a detailed answer, where you need to write or tell yourself.

Maximum Points, which can be scored for all tasks (oral and written) on the exam in English - 100 points(80 points for writing and 20 points for oral).

The oral part is optional, however, 100 points can only be obtained if you passed the speaking session on a separate day

In 2018, 72,500 people passed the exam in English, 15 people passed 100 points. This represents 0.02% of the total number of participants and is the lowest in elective subjects.

Passing score when the English exam is considered "passed", in 2018 was 22 points, but for admission to a good university or a specialized specialty, this, of course, is not enough. The principle here is “the higher the score, the better”. Universities every year change their passing score from 60-80 points, and the more prestigious the university, the higher the score.

It is already known that in 2019, the USE in English will be held on the following days:

  1. Early period: March 27, 2019 (oral part) and 04/01/2019 (written part)
  2. Main period: June 5, 2019 (written), June 7-8 (oral)

Among the persons who can take the exam before the main period: graduates of previous years, participants in olympiads / competitions, schoolchildren who are sent to serve in the army or plan to study abroad, and many others.

In case of force majeure, there are also reserve days when the exam can be held.

What level of English is required to pass the exam?

If you want to get a high score in the USE English, your level must be not lower than Upper-Intermediate level on the CEFR scale, but this does not mean at all that students with a lower level do not “shine” on the exam.

According to the regulatory documents, the USE tasks in English vary in complexity from basic (A2 / A2 +) to high (B2) and, accordingly, includes three levels:

  • base: Elementary (A2) and Pre-Intermediate (A2+)
  • elevated: Intermediate (B1), can be skipped
  • high: Upper-Intermediate (B2)

However, in reality this is not always the case. For example, in 2018, the first listening task contained A2 material, and the reading text in task 3 was Advanced (C1). Therefore, the majority of applicants, even with level B2, could not get a high score on this task.

Sometimes compilers USE in English include tasks of the basic and high levels in one block, leaving the increased level (B1) behind. Jumping from easy to super complex can be confusing for anyone and affect their ability to comprehend more complex material.

CEFR scale of English levels for passing the exam

● degrees of comparison of adjectives

● ordinal numbers

According to the vocabulary, the participants incorrectly used polysemantic words in the context, did not know synonyms and antonyms, confused suffixes and prefixes when forming new words. And, of course, there were spelling mistakes!

Section "Letter" As expected, it turned out to be the most difficult test for those who pass the ZNO-2018 in English.

In the "Letter" task, participants lost points for:

  • incorrect or inaccurate answers to questions
  • combining the answers to two questions into one
  • rhetorical questions to a friend

In the “Composition” task, for many, the loss of points was not related to the required volume, but to the following:

  • non-compliance with the plan
  • inability to reveal the topic
  • unrevealed topics
  • violation of the logic of the statement
  • a large number of grammatical, lexical and spelling errors.

Well oral part of the exam, which was passed with an “excellent” 65%, was not without unpleasant errors. In task No. 1, the inspectors noted the wrong stress and incorrect logical intonation, in task No. 2 - grammatical errors in the construction of questions.

Task No. 3 from the “Speaking” section showed that the majority simply memorize school topics, and accordingly there is no spontaneity of speech. In task No. 4, participants often gave incomplete answers and inattentively read the task.

Instead of a conclusion:

In contact with

Without much embellishment, we can say that in the USE exam in English, an essay is the most difficult task. How can you correctly express your thought, give it logical arguments, support them with examples and explanations, and at the same time format the text correctly and without errors, and even not go beyond the number of words? In this article, we will try to analyze the structure of the essay and give tips on improving the quality of your essay.

Let's start from the end. Your essay will be judged on the following criteria:

The maximum number of points you can get for an essay is 14 points.

Before thinking about the correct fulfillment of each criterion, first let's make our essay in English testable. The most important thing here is volume.

Formally, your essay in English should fit into 200-250 words. This is not to be taken literally and to panic if you have written 198 words. However, keep in mind that the essay will not be checked if the number of words in it is less than 180. If you get more than 275 words, then the reviewer will count 250 words from the beginning of the essay, draw the rest and check everything up to the line. That is, in the first scenario, you lose the entire essay; at the second, most likely, you will lose the conclusion, which is also important.

First of all, your essay in English should cover ALL aspects of the assignment, and should also be written in an appropriate style (neutral). It should be logically divided into paragraphs and correspond to the plan proposed in the assignment.

In order not to get confused in the process of writing your essay, you need to spend 5-7 minutes thinking about the plan and preparing all the arguments. Traditionally, we will divide the essay into five paragraphs.

Paragraph 1. Introduction

There should be a problem statement here. Since the statement of the problem has already been stated in the assignment, your task is to correctly retell it. It is to REPRESENT, not to paraphrase.

Tip: Do not reread the task 10 times until the wording is hammered into your head. Then writing an introduction in your own words will be very, very difficult. Read the given situation in the task once or twice, make sure you understand it correctly. Close the prepared situation and try to retell it in English exactly as you understood it, as if you were telling a friend about it who did not understand what it was about. ATTENTION: after you have done this, be sure to open the situation and make sure that your retelling essentially matches the situation given to you. Now you can go further.

Instead of the banal Some people think ... Others think ..." can be used:

Some people claim that ..., while others argue that ...

After you have described the essence of the problem, you can directly ask the question, which you will answer in your essay. For instance: “What is better: ... or ...?”, “What should we do: ... or ...?” etc. In 2018, a clarification was released that classified rhetorical questions as stylistic errors. Therefore, we do not use them.

In the last sentence of the introductory paragraph, you should state the purpose of your essay. This can be done, for example, like this:

In this essay I will try to look upon this issue.
In this essay I will try to express my opinion on this issue.
In this essay I would like to express my point of view on this issue.
In this essay I will try to answer this question. (This is the easiest option, if it will be difficult for you to remember the previous two, remember it)

Paragraph 2. Your opinion

It is most logical to start this paragraph by expressing your position on this issue. Useful phrases (be sure to follow this punctuation!):

In my mind...
From my point of view, ...
To my mind...
Personally, I think that...
I am sure that... (Please note! We do not abbreviate: we write I am...)
As far as I am concerned, ...

Next, you need to give 2-3 arguments confirming your point of view. Arguments can be any, if you correctly interpret them. That is, such that it would be difficult to argue with them (within reasonable limits, of course).

Tip: It is better to give 2 arguments and justify them in detail and give examples in support of them than 3 short and not fully disclosed. Remember that the number of words in an essay is limited.

Here we should not forget about the means of logical connection of sentences. The first argument is good to start with:

Firstly...
To start with, ...
To begin with, ...
First of all...

After you have formulated the first argument, you need to confirm it and / or give an example to support it. Here are the simplest models for how this can be done:

<аргумент>because...
<аргумент>. That is why...
<аргумент>. For example, ...

If you started with “Firstly...”, then the second argument should begin with the word Secondly...

If the first argument came with the phrases “To start with, ...”, “To begin with, ...”, then the second one can be started with the following words:

Moreover, ...
Furthermore, ...
Besides, ...
In addition,...

The second argument must also be supported by an example or proof.

Paragraph 3. Contrasting opinion

You will begin the paragraph with the statement of the opposite opinion on the proposed topic or issue. You can do it like this:

Others believe that ...
Some people argue that ...
However, some people think that ...

This is followed by 1-2 arguments confirming the opposite opinion. I advise you to think of two first. And how much to write in the end: 1 or 2 - decide in the process, based on the resulting size of your essay.

Tip: You will then have to challenge the opposite arguments, so when you come up with them initially, think about how you will challenge them. If you have nothing to object to the invented argument, it is better to immediately replace it with another one so as not to do this while writing an essay. It's also limited!
Tip: When challenging arguments, you should not repeat anything written in the second paragraph. So if you can't come up with a counterargument without repeating yourself, try coming up with something else. Alternatively, you can come up with other arguments “for” while the essay has not yet been written. In any case, it's better to think it through initially while you are planning an essay, rather than in the process of writing!

Paragraph 4. Your counterarguments

The point of this paragraph is to explain why you disagree with the opposing opinion. You can start a paragraph, for example, with a sentence:

I cannot agree with this opinion because ...
I am afraid I cannot agree with this idea because ...
“I am afraid” sounds a little strange, and not “I"m afraid”, but it’s better not to shorten it, because you can pay for it with precious points.

ATTENTION: if you gave two arguments in the previous paragraph, then both must be refuted. They can be distinguished by the following phrases:

as for...,
speaking about...,
As far as ... is concerned,

Tip: When refuting opposing arguments, it is best to offer ways to solve them, and not prove their incapacity. For example, if someone believes that pets are dangerous, then one should not argue that they are, in fact, harmless. It is better to turn this disadvantage into dignity, saying that, on the other hand, they are excellent guards in country houses.

Paragraph 5. Conclusion

The most common mistake many students make is that they simply state their opinion in the conclusion. This is not enough. After all, the conclusion applies to the entire essay, not just the second paragraph.

Thus, in conclusion, it is necessary to summarize everything that was said in the essay and express your point of view. You can also give your recommendations on the existing problem. Most importantly, the conclusion should not contain any new information.

In conclusion...
To sum up, ...
To conclude...

Further, we let the reader understand that there are two points of view on this problem, and despite the opposite point of view, we still adhere to our own. For example, you can do this in the following way:

Despite the fact that ..., I am convinced that ...
Taking into consideration different opinions on this issue, I believe that ...

Essay language design

After you have written the USE essay in English, be sure to review it again for possible errors. From my experience of the most common mistakes, I advise you to pay attention to the following things.

English is one of the four languages that students can choose to take as part of the exam. Starting from 2015, the exam consists of two parts: written and oral, which graduates will have to take on different days. To get the maximum score, you must successfully pass the written test and pass the oral part of the exam. Changes in 2016 affected only the wording of the 3rd task of the oral section, as well as an increase in the passing score to 22 (last year the minimum score was 20 units). For all other parameters, testing is almost completely identical to last year's version.

The structure of the exam in English

The structure of the written part of the exam in a foreign language, including English, includes four sections. 180 minutes are allotted to complete the tasks, there will be 40 tasks in total. The maximum number of points that can be obtained for the written part is 80.

Structure of the written exam:

1.listening. It contains 9 tasks, in two of which it will be necessary to establish a correspondence between the content of the text heard and the proposed statements, and in the remaining seven - to choose the correct answer from three. Suggested writing time is 30 minutes.

2.Reading. It contains 9 tasks, of which seven involve choosing the correct answer from four options, in one it will be necessary to establish a correspondence between mini-texts and headings, and in one more - to fill in the gaps in the read text from the proposed passages. Suggested writing time is 30 minutes.

3.Grammar and vocabulary. It contains 20 tasks, of which 13 have a short answer, and the remaining 7 are asked to choose the correct answer from four options. The recommended writing time is 40 minutes.

4.Letter. Contains 2 tasks in which the student will be asked to answer a letter (100-140 words) and write a short essay expressing a personal opinion on the proposed problem (200-250 words). Recommended run time is 80 minutes.

Oral exam, for the successful delivery of which you can get a maximum of 20 points, is held separately from the written one. Each student is given 15 minutes to answer, including preparation time (one and a half minutes for each task). The oral block includes 4 tasks:

1. Reading aloud a short passage of text on a popular science topic.

2. Compilation of five questions using keywords. Questions must be formulated after reading the proposed advertisement.

3. Description of one of the three proposed photographs based on the proposed plan.

4. Comparison of events in two photographs using the proposed plan.

Tasks are given to the student sequentially, after completing the previous one. The maximum number of points will be received by the examinee who fully completes the tasks, adheres to the proposed response plan and the topic of the assignment.

Preparation for the exam in English

To successfully pass the exam in a foreign language, the student needs to solve at least 17 tasks from 2 and 3, or only 3 sections of the written part. The points obtained are converted into a five-point scale in accordance with the normative tables.

Preparation for the exam in English should begin in advance, even if the applicant has a good command of the subject. Before taking the exam, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the control and measuring materials and demo options, practice passing tests online on specialized sites. However, this may not be enough, especially if the applicant expects a high score, because it is impossible to independently assess the correctness of the letter and the level of preparedness for the oral part of the exam. The specialists of the English&Home center will be happy to help graduates in preparing for the exam, check the level of preparation, explain the nuances of passing the exam and help them to believe in themselves.
